Joseph and Colette Discuss Terry Funk vs. Mick Foley
Our Terry Funk retrospective draws to a close.
Joseph and I agree: if Terry Funk isn’t the Greatest Wrestler of All Time, he is certainly no more than a step or two behind whoever you’d rather bestow that honor upon. This was the fourth Terry Funk singles match we’ve covered at BIG EGG, the fifth overall including a Funks vs. Brody/Hansen tag, and including a piece I wrote about the Funker at Exploding Cage, you’ve got a lot to chew on, if you haven’t already. Here are links to those pieces — you can watch Funk/Foley on Peacock (or your country’s version of the WWE Network) or in its uncut glory, Val Venis vignette and all, over on Dailymotion.

Next Up: We return to discussing some of the highlights of the first half of 2023! We're back on course to St. Louis Anarchy to catch the first slobberknocker between 1 Called Manders and Mad Dog Connelly!

When we were putting together the matchlist for this brief excursion into Terry Funk’s career, I was pretty quick to suggest one of his death matches against Cactus Jack in Japan. We went with WWE, of course, but I’m kind of curious as to how much of the Funk/Foley rivalry you’ve seen, because what struck me most about the match on my multiple viewings of it (to say nothing of the fact that I watched all of the TV leading to it, which is unusual for me in the context of BIG EGG) is how their dynamic feels different from promotion to promotion. There’s an IWA version of their relationship, an ECW one, and this one — if you’ve got enough experience, do you have a preference?

I have seen the famous IWA deathmatch final but not the fire brand match or any of the other ECW stuff. Perhaps my most extensive exposure to Funk/Foley as a feud and match up is actually their 2006 feud and the One Night Stand 06 tag bout they had which I think is a pretty damn great match actually. I probably would take that tag over this just because it has a bit more blood and actually centers both Funk and Foley in it.

I hold the ONS tag in high regard, too. I am currently entranced by how stupid the Kane/Undertaker angle is, but maybe that’ll be the next WWE angle I revisit.
