This week, we have the good fortune of leaving Hunter Hearst Helmsley behind, going back to BIG EGG’s roots: watching stuff that looks fun to Joseph and myself in the moment. This month’s matchlist came together very quickly, like the two of us were Corey Feldman in The Goonies, grabbing all the coins we could without really putting a ton of emphasis on a theme or vibe. Joseph said it was time to watch some lucha, I said “okay, you pick,” and here we are, with a goddamn banger. I also chipped in an extra review to mark 1,000 subscribers — thanks for getting us there!
Next Up: This week we do our first dip into some real proper shoot style! It's a first time watch for both of us as we see Volk Han take on Mitsuya Nagai in RINGS!

In the back of my head I knew AAA was pretty new, but I think seeing Jake in the crowd pushed that out of my mind, though bringing him in is also a very New Promotion with Money thing to do. I wish I had more of an understanding of AAA at this point in time but my knowledge of it is basically begins in 1995 and is almost entirely based on Rey Mysterio Jr.’s exploits in ECW and Japan, the When Worlds Collide PPV, and so on — is this still mostly new territory for you as well?

Pretty much. Where I am in my knowledge of the 90s, the company has literally just opened. Primary reason to watch them even early on is for Rey Jr., Psicosis, and El Hijo del Santo. I actually don't know when Satanico and Pirata finally make their way into the company.

Piecing things together in Cagematch, they both start working AAA regularly in the summer of ‘93, about a year into AAA’s existence, along with MS-1 — an extension of the Los Infernales reunion of the early 90s. As always, I wonder if this would work better if I had more context, but Wikipedia doesn’t seem to consider this period worth mentioning in either wrestlers’ biographies, their 80s beef over Morgan leaving Infernales notwithstanding, but what we get here feels very much like a Special Attraction, something that takes place in a AAA ring but exists in its own little universe. I’m sure that context would be nice, but when a guy starts gushing blood four minutes into a match and that blood ends up staining his opponent’s teeth, the picture comes into focus anyhow — they may run together from time to time, but Satánico and Morgan are two men who do not like each other, and Satanico is keen to let Morgan know that old grudges don’t die early.
