Extra EXTRA BIG EGG: WWE Experiments with the Unbreakable Three Way
Carlito, Johnny Nitro, and Shelton Benjamin figure out the new science on the fly.
While watching Unbreakable 2005, which, beyond its main event, benefitted from a reinvigorated, post-One Night Stand interest in ECW with Sabu, Rhino, and Raven turning back the clock, I found my mind turning back to this era of wrestling, which was when I started dipping my toes back into wrestling after Triple H’s reign of terror chased me off. Watching Joe vs. Styles vs. Daniels reminded me of when its rhythms began entering into WWE’s way of doing things, specifically the Intercontinental Championship triple threat match between Shelton Benjamin, Johnny Nitro, and Carlito, which I probably found mindblowing back then because I’d never seen a guy get monkeyflipped into a dropkick before, but is now part of a long, long tradition of middle-of-the-road championship matches from one of those periods when WWE was pretending the title meant something as opposed to actually making it mean something. There’s some fun stuff in the 12:50 these three get — more thoughts after the paywall. Happy new year, y’all!
