Joseph and Colette Discuss Carlos Colón vs. Hercules Ayala

Carlos Colón and Hercules Ayala risk second degree burns for the sake of scaling the BIG EGG MASTERLIST.

Joseph and Colette Discuss Carlos Colón vs. Hercules Ayala
WWC

October is traditionally horror month around my neck of the woods, so Joseph and I put together a list of spooky, bloody, phantasmagoric delights for it. We begin in Puerto Rico, which is one of those territories that's easy for fans digging through wrestling history for the first or second time to overlook, though between the island's recent bloody cage match spectacles, Bad Bunny's WWE Backlash show giving the fed-pilled among us reason to care about Savio Vega without watching the absurd amount of work he put in beyond his brief tenure in the World Wrestling Federation, and the proliferation of wrestling critics and influencers mining ever deeper into wrestling's past as respite from its present, you never know when the WWC revolution will pop off.

This isn't exactly an obscure match in need of rescue, but between its iconic visual and the ocean of blood Carlos Colón and Hercules Ayala spilled over their years of conflict, there's one hell of an MV waiting to be made by the right sicko. Where it ranks for us sickos on the BIG EGG MASTERLIST is another issue entirely. Joseph liked this one a lot. I liked it notably less than he did. In sussing out exactly how great this match is in comparison to every other match we've covered for the site, I get around to asking about the current critical trend towards favoring simplicity and clarity of intent in wrestling, but that's what they call "premium content." You're gonna have to scale the paywall for that.

Up Next: It's not Halloween without some HAVOC. We're heading over to our favorite seasonal WCW pay-per-view for a big time battle between BIG EGG favorite Big Van Vader and the incomparable Cactus Jack. BANG BANG!

Having read both of our reviews, and having had a few days to consider mine more over the past few days, a question occurred to me: am I being too cruel in wanting more violence from this match?

Carlos Colón and Hercules Ayala Walk Through Fire
Carlos Colón and Hercules Ayala pioneers one of wrestling’s most incredible (and incredibly risky) spectacles in Puerto Rico.

I don't know if cruel is the word exactly given how much further would take this particular style of wrestling in the years to come. But looking at it in comparison to its contemporaries, and even to other stylistic companions in the years to come, I feel like it holds up a great deal. This may just be a matter of expectations here. Have you seen the Hansen series with Colon?

Burn, baby, burn: blood and fire in Puerto Rico
As with so many things, it starts with the Wrestler of the Year award. At a ceremony given a lot of gravity and weight by the hosting of one Gordon Solie, current WWC Universal Champion Hercules Ayala preens for the camera in his gray tuxedo, ready to claim the award
